The Ladies Professional Golf Association, or LPGA, is coming to Los Angeles–specifically, Palos Verdes in the South Bay–for the Palos Verdes Championship presented by Bank of America from April 28 to May 1, 2022.
144 of the best female golfers in the world will convene to compete for the $1.5 million purse. The field will include notable names such as Jin Young Ko, Lydia Ko, Patty Tavatanakit, Lexi Thompson, Minjee Lee, Brooke M. Henderson, Danielle Kang, Jessica Korda, Yuka Saso, In Gee Chun, Hinako Shibuno, and Anna Davis, to name a few.
Palos Verdes Golf Club, often referred to as a “hidden gem” in Southern California, has a rich history hosting women’s golf events. Palos Verdes has hosted the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge women’s collegiate championship for the past 25 years. Past individual winners include Carlota Ciganda, Natalie Gulbis, Brittany Lang, Bronte Law, Andrea Lee, Leona Maguire, Lorena Ochoa and Annie Park.
LPGA Tour
The course that the competitors will be vying for the trophy at was designed in 1924 by the renowned team of George C. Thomas and William P. “Billy” Bell who also designed the infamous Riviera Country Club, Bel Air Country Club, Los Angeles Country Club North, and the course at Ojai Valley Inn. The fairways and rough at the course are kikuyu grass, and the firm and fast greens are composed of bent and poa annua grasses.
This is the inaugural year for the event, bringing in a great deal of excitement to the South Bay of Los Angeles. The event is following another LPGA Tour tournament, the DIO Implant LA Open at Wilshire Country Club, for a unique back-to-back offering of Los Angeles golf.
“We are very excited to expand our footprint in Los Angeles with back-to-back events in the area for the first time, adding to the Tour’s already prominent presence in Southern California,” said LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan.
